Central NY man convicted of shooting officer

ITHACA, N.Y. - (AP) -- A jury has convicted a 23-year-old central New York man of shooting a police officer but did not find him guilty of attempted murder. The Ithaca Journal reports, the Tompkins County jurors couldn't agree on the first-degree attempted murder charge and a judge allowed them to return a partial verdict Monday in the case against Jamel Booker of Ithaca. They found him guilty of the other seven charges, including aggravated assault of a police officer, first-degree assault and criminal possession of a weapon. Booker's lawyer had argued that he didn't intend to kill Ithaca police officer Anthony Augustine during an Oct. 11 foot chase with two officers who'd pulled him over while he was driving a stolen car. Augustine was hit in the chest and spent a week in a Syracuse hospital.
